GeoWel Research has analysed trade, remittances, foreign investment and official development assistance. By looking at patterns of economic inter-dependencies in the broader Caucasus region we have tried to assess the way in which these dependencies feed into security and insecurity. The research conducted by GeoWel fits within the context of a broader project entitled "Intra-and Inter-Societal Sources of Instability in the Caucasus and EU Opportunities to Respond." This project is funded by the Framework Seven program of the European Union and involves a consortium of eight partners conducting research across the region from 2014 through 2017. The project is led by the Center for Governance and Culture (GCE) at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and also includes GeoWel Research (Georgia), Kabardino-Balkarian State University (Russian Federation), Khazar University (Azerbaijan), Russian State University for the Humanities (Russian Federation), SWP - German Institute for International and Security Affairs (Germany), and the University of Fribourg (Switzerland).
